NHCC's Theatre Ensemble Presents 'The Book of Liz'
North Hennepin Community College’s Theater Ensemble will be presenting the hilarious comedy ‘The Book of Liz’ December 2 – 6, 2009. Written by the sibling playwriting duo of David and Amy Sedaris, this hysterical look at a cloistered woman on a big adventure in the outside world has become a sensation wherever it has played.
Liz, also known as Sister Elizabeth Donderstock, is Squeamish, a religious order not unlike the Amish. She makes cheese balls, (both traditional and smoky) that sustain the existence of her entire religious community, Cluster Haven. Feeling unappreciated among her Squeamish brethren, she decides to venture into the outside world to see what fortune has in store. One hilarious adventure follows another in this delightfully off-key hymn to all of the cliché we live by, whether we know it or not.
David Sedaris has gained popularity through a series of radio commentaries and essays airing on National Public Radio. In addition, he has become a best-selling author who has written several humorous books, including Me Talk Pretty One day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and his latest – When You Are Engulfed in Flames. All of his books have become New York Times Best Sellers. His sister, Amy, is an actress and comedienne who is best known for her work in the television series ‘Strangers With Candy. A former member of the Chicago-based Second City comedy troupe, she has appeared in many films and television series, and has written a number of scripts with her brother, under the name ‘The Talent Family’. In the original production of The Book of Liz, she performed the title character.
Performances run December 2 through December 6, 2009, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm, and Wednesday and Sunday at 2:00 pm. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors, students, and matinee performances. Tickets can be purchased online at www.nhcc.edu/events or at the door 30 minutes prior to performances. NHCC Theatre is in the Fine Arts Center located at West Broadway and 85th Ave. N.
